Augmentations


Augmentation is a catch-all phrase that refers to any surgically attached apparatus that replaces, enhances, or provides function to the host. Augmentations can be overt or concealed, intent on intimidation as much as function, or deep installed systems providing discreet enhancement. Whether replacing the lost limb of a drift veteran, enhancing the strength of a dock worker, or applying the vanity of a social elite, augmentations have become a common and accepted part of society.
The following entries state the augmentation type. They can be technological, biological or mystical. Regardless of type, these use all the same rules regarding purchase, installation and slots etc. found in the core rules.
These augments use the slot stated.
Personal augments require no slots. These are either basic non-invasive augments or more complex systems that do not fall into any particular category.
Merge Station introduces a new concept where certain augmentations require an pre-existing augmentation before it can be installed. These are commonly minor augments that provide function but are not complex enough to be an entire augmentation system.
A few augments listed with "(addition)" are flexible as to how they are installed. They may be installed as a stand alone system or as an addition to an augment of the same type that already occupies the slot. To be clear, augments of different types (technological, biological or mystical) can not occupy the same slot.

An Autho-Chip is a tiny sealed microchip that is imbedded under the skin. Legal citizens receive an Autho-Chip at birth as part of their citizenship status. These chips hold the individual's personal identifiers such as name, address, employment and other census information. Most people authorize their chips as banking access, granting them remote access to spend and store credits. Autho-Chips can be configured to perform a digital handshake, passing and receiving identifying information of a person the owner greets. This function can be turned off permanently or temporarily. Most businesses happily use the Autho-Chip system as payment gateways, most high-end stores require it. An encrypted chip is a specialty chip that holds deep cover information. These chips are usually well hidden and some can only be accessed physically. A black chip is a government tracking chip placed in criminals. These chips are tracked 24 hours a day with alerts going off if the chip enters a restricted zone as programed for each chip.

Detects and analyses trace chemicals in the environment. The Chem Sensor will create a visible and/or audible warning stating the chemicals and ammounts detected. The system is commonly supplied with a small display screen and/or micro speaker. The standard system will warn you when you are within an area of hazardous chemicals. An advanced system may warn you, dependant on the ammount of chemical trace in the environment (DM's discretion), before you enter an unsafe area. The system grants no benefit to attacks made that had no previous existance, the system will warn you of the explosion of a tear gas greanade, but not before it explodes.

Long range communication system allowing you to transmit and receive communications from other standard communication systems. The Commlink can receive from and transmit to all modern broadcast system, including public radio. A Commlink can be linked to any technological ear augmentation as part of the installation process, in such a mode, the commlink provides auditory advice that is difficult for anyone else to hear (DC25 Perception from an adjacent square). If linked to a Neural Network, communications are passed directly to the brain as digital information rather than auditable signal. The Commlink can be tuned to multiple systems simultaneously. Tuning a Commlink to a specific device requires a DC15 Computer check. A standard model provides basic encryption (DC15) and a 10-mile range. An advanced model provided secure encryption (DC25) and a 100-mile range. A military system has extreme encryption (DC35) and a range that reaches from a planet surface to orbiting ships, or ship to ship in combat range.

A small flexible view screen attached the lower arm or inner wrist. A standard model is a lowe profile digital display capable of photo realistic images. A Holoprojector functions as a standard model but also has the capacity to project a rudimentary holographic image into an area 1 square foot above the screen. Whether animalistic, abstract or horror themed, it has become somewhat of a trend to alter one's facial features. Some folks opt to mimic an animal gaining any combination of whiskers, pointed ears, muzzle, teeth, tongue, or iris alterations, others aspire to frighten with horns, scales, or teeth. A Few opt for more abstract features such as illuminating circuitry or other overtly bazar alterations. Such alterations serve no practical purpose beyond social statements but may alter Diplomacy and Intimidate checks with a positive or negative result, at a DM's discretion. Installed into the forearm, either under arm or over, the system consists of a grapple cartridge (spring-loaded grapple hook on 50 feet of poly wire) slotted into a firing mechanism. Treat the grapple line as a ranged Special weapon (1d4; Critical x2; Range 10 ft.; Type P). Locations with ample places to attach a hook are AC 5. A critical hit is required to grapple a creature in combat. The poly wire has AC10, hardness 15 and 35 hit points; the wire is not electrically conductive. A cartridge with a cut wire cannot be re fired. As a move action, an extended wire can be retracted, if the hook is attached, you are pulled toward it. The mechanism can lift an amount of weight as stated by the model. Unhooking a grapple not under tension requires a full round, removing a grapple under tension requires a STR check DC 25 and the capacity to lift whatever weight is on the tension. As a free action you can release an extended poly wire from the cartridge but the system cannot be fired again until reloaded.

A Sense Record system records what you see and hear, when you have it activated. A SoftSlot system allows you to store digital information on chips deep within the brain. You can use it to store data, programs, media files or memory recordings (from a Sense Record augment). Each SoftSlot can hold files of only a single type. A Mk1 slot can store one type of file. A Mk2 SoftSlot has two slots and can store two types of files. A Mk3 has three slots and can store three types of files. If a slot is used to store memory recording, it cannot store data, programs, or media files. Each SoftSlot can store 1 Petabyte of data, 24 hours of memory, or unlimited programs or media. Deleting stored information can be done as a mental command, requiring a full round action. It is important to note that stored data can be encrypted and even safe guarded with anti-hack software. Such data cannot be accessed or deleted without the corresponding encryption key and attempting such may trigger the safe guards.

A tail is mechanical appendage fused to the base of your spine. You designate the appearance of the tail. Cosmetic tails often appear as cutesy animal tails with fur and puffy tips but they can appear more threatening or abstract. A cosmetic tail can be moved about but cannot be used to grasp or hold anything. A prehensile tail is far more advanced in technology and can be used to grab and climb. Prehensile tails grant +5 to climb and are otherwise treated as an arm, including being able to receive a single arm augmentation. A prehensile tail can be used to make any skill check you could normally make, although doing so with the tail alone causes a -5 penalty to any check. Note that a prehensile tail does not grant a additional attack not matter what augments are attached to it.

In recent years, wing augments have become something of an extreme fashion statement. Wings are available in any manner of material: feathers, bat leather, insect chitin and even technological constructs. Wing augments offer no change to your height and no practical consideration to cover, concealment or general bulk. Cosmetic wings are fashion augments that offer no practical benefit beyond their social implications. Cosmetic wings width can be up to twice your height or as small as desired. They can be extended, flapped and folded away, but they do not provide a flight speed. Standard wings are at least as wide as twice your height. They give you a flight speed equal to your base speed with average maneuverability. While flying your encumbrance loads do not change. The concealed upgrade allows your wings to be withdrawn into the body completely. While withdrawn winds pose no penalty to your bulk or skill checks, they are still visible. When withdrawn, concealed wings can only be detected on you with a DC25 Perception check for a visible search or DC15 Perception on a physical pat-down.
